Ray Black's 1944 Schwimmwagen

[Schwimmwagen] This schwimmer was dispatched from Wolfsburg only a few weeks before the factory was virtually destroyed by heavy bomber raids.

As far as ray can determine, it spent most of its post-war life in Germany, but spent some time in Spain. Like ray's Kubel it was originally delivered to the Army stores depot in Kassel.

From a town in th eBlack Forest, it made its way to Melbourne, Australia, to a Porsche enthusiast who intended to restore the car, but never got around to even starting the job. This, and the fact that the schwimmer was in largely original order, was very fortunate for Ray, who purchased the car.

Ray says that his most important tool during the restoration was his fax machine! Accurate drawings, plans, and lots of great advice was forthcoming from many schwimmer friends in the UK, Germany and the USA. Ray is very greatful to them, as authorative schwimmer advice is non-existent. This is perhaps the loneliest schwimmer in the world.
